Custer, South Dakota. That is where this weekend’s beautifully simplistic adventure took place. A total variety of activities made up this escapade including wine tasting, a visit to Mount Rushmore, oh and a race. For some it was a 50-mile race, and for others that just wasn’t long enough… Those stubborn, daredevils said, “I want more!” So they took the challenge of the 100-mile race. And along with a few other dedicated loving friends of one of these daredevils, I got to help. I got to see parts of this race for myself.
Kevin Kline. Some may know him as an intelligent, witty, smart-ass radio personality on a very popular morning radio show host in Houston, TX. Some may know him as an incredibly dedicated, work hard ‘til your toenails fall off, and always track the mileage in your 120 pairs of running shoes fellow marathon/stupid ultra runner. Some may know him as a man who created a way for pediatric cancer survivors to smile even more because they have more and more awareness brought to them each and every day all around the country with one simple word: Snowdrop. One knows him as a loving husband (and sometimes her child). I (along with many of us enormously blessed folks) get to call him a friend. An undeniably humble, giving, selfless, entertaining, immature, adventurous, one-of-a-kind and ever so caring friend.
Kevin and I have been dear friends since 2011. We’ve gone through quite a few unforgettable experiences, and this is without a doubt one for the books! Alongside with some key players of this experience, I got to play a few roles in his 100-mile race.
My brother and I got to assist his wife, Trish, as we adventured around the small towns of the Mount Rushmore area following the maps to each aid station like it was a treasure map! Tending to his every possible need, whether it was making the occasional orange slices or pizza flavored combos packs, mixing the Tailwind into his hydration bladders, fetching headlamps, or making sure his muscles were rolled out-Drew had that crucial job, we had his back! I also got to experience the race trail for myself. Kline was crazy enough to ask ME to help pace him when the miles and times got tough.
My was it amazing to watch the transition, the dedication, the tears, the increase strength it took to make a goal-a dream that seemed almost impossible for many a reality for him.
Frank Medrano, one of Kev’s best friends, was almost as crazy as Kevin-taking on the 50-mile race. It was a day of teamwork! Frank’s wonderful wife Erika, Trish, Drew, two surprise guests Jerrod and Linda, and I witnessed Kevin and Frank’s race first hand, but they had so many people behind them-supporting them from all over!! I want to give them all the upmost respect for the work and credit they deserve, but I’m not sure if I can do as well as Kevin did himself! So if you want to know more about the other super heroes in his crew like Brian Anderson and Jon Olson you can visit Kevin Kline’s Facebook page!!
This entire experience is hard to put into words so I did my best to bring as much as I could to life! I hope you that you enjoy watching almost as much as we enjoyed getting to be apart of this! And if this doesn’t encourage you to ever run 100 miles… that’s okay. I don’t blame you a bit! But I do hope this encourages you to make a goal-a dream- of yours you think is impossible a reality; because if you have an ounce of the possibility to make it happen, it might be an ounce more than others will ever have in their life.
